The British National Grid starts with a grid of 25 squares arranged five by five.
Each square measures 500km by 500km and is assigned a letter from A to Z. The letter I is omitted as it could be confused with the number one.
The only squares that overlap with England, Scotland and Wales are H, N, O, S and T.
H covers Shetland and Orkney.
N covers Scotland.
O covers a tiny part of the North Yorkshire Coastline near Ravenscar.
S covers Wales, Cornwall, Southwestern and central England.
T covers Eastern England and London.
